The Account Of Creation The record of Genesis chapter one gives us the account of the creation of the world and all that is in it. It tells us that God created everything. The Latin phrase "ex nihilo" which means "out of nothing" is used to describe the work of God in creation. God did not take elements that previously existed and "make" something. He created from nothing, everything that exists. The Hebrew author says "By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible" (Heb. 11:3). The word "created" in our English translation is from the Hebrew word "bara" which speaks of creation out of nothing as well. The Psalmist tells us that "By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, And all the hosts of them by the breath of His mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap; He lays up the deep in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast" (Ps. 33:6-9). God spoke everything into existence. John identifies Jesus as the Word who was in the beginning, who was with God and was God. He also tells us that Jesus made everything. So we might say that through the agency of the Word (Jesus) all things were created or spoken into existence (Jn. 1:1-3). Day 1: On day one, God said "Let there be light." This light illuminated the heavens and earth until the light bearers were created on day four. Day 2: The expanse or firmament was created which divided the waters above and under the firmament. Day 3: The dry land or earth was created. Psalm 104:5-9 tells us that the waters of the flood returned to the boundaries set by God. The earth in this context refers to the continents. Day 4: The light bearers are created. The sun, moon, stars and planets. Day 5: The birds and fishes which inhabit the firmament and the waters. Day 6: The creatures of the earth (land animals) and God's ultimate creation - Man were created on this day. God said, "Let Us make man in Our image." The three persons of the God-head working together created man in the image of God. Day 7: God rested from His labors (Gen. 2:1-3).
The following chart shows the days of creation (Genesis chapter one) and the corresponding creation for each day. On the first three days God made the habitats. On the last three days He made the inhabitants.
